Bengaluru Traffic Police Launch Special Drive Against E-Commerce Delivery Violations
One-Day Crackdown Leads to Rs 9.64 Lakh in Fines; Helmetless Riders Penalized the Most
In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) launched a special one-day drive on Saturday to penalize traffic violations by e-commerce delivery agents. The crackdown resulted in fines amounting to Rs 9.64 lakh, with helmetless two-wheeler riders paying the highest penalty of Rs 2.91 lakh.
Addressing Rising Complaints and Traffic Violations
With the rapid expansion of e-commerce, the number of delivery agents on Bengaluru’s roads has surged. However, complaints from residents regarding rash driving, non-compliance with traffic signals, and wrong-side driving have also increased. Responding to these concerns, the Bengaluru Traffic Police initiated a citywide enforcement drive.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M N Anucheth stated, “Special drives are conducted regularly by BTP. This initiative specifically targeted e-commerce delivery agents to address visible traffic violations. After imposing penalties, we also conducted a safety awareness session to educate them on traffic rules.”
Major Traffic Violations and Fines Imposed
During the drive, traffic authorities identified and penalized delivery personnel for multiple infractions. The most common violations included:
- Riding without a helmet – Rs 2.91 lakh collected in fines
- Jumping traffic signals
- Driving on the wrong side of the road
- Using mobile phones while riding
- Over-speeding and reckless driving
- Disobeying one-way traffic rules
Traffic police emphasized that these violations endanger not just the delivery agents but also pedestrians and other motorists on the road.
Mandatory Traffic Safety Class for Violators
Beyond penalizing traffic offenders, the Bengaluru Traffic Police also held a special class for the delivery agents, educating them on road safety, traffic laws, and the consequences of reckless driving. This initiative aimed to instill a sense of responsibility among delivery personnel, who often face pressure to meet tight delivery deadlines.
Mixed Reactions: Public Support vs. Delivery Agents’ Concerns
The crackdown received strong support from Bengaluru residents, who have long complained about traffic indiscipline among delivery riders. Many citizens expressed relief over stricter enforcement, emphasizing that such measures were necessary to improve road safety.
On the other hand, some delivery executives voiced concerns about the operational pressure from e-commerce companies. They argued that tight delivery schedules often force them to violate traffic rules, highlighting the need for systemic changes within the gig economy.
Future Measures: Ensuring Safer Roads in Bengaluru
Authorities have indicated that similar drives will be conducted more frequently to ensure compliance with traffic laws. Additionally, discussions with e-commerce firms may be initiated to encourage better training and safer delivery practices among their workforce.
