On Tuesday, a contingent of 150 police officers, led by an Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) from Coimbatore, entered the premises of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s Isha Foundation in Thondamuthur. This inquiry was initiated in response to a Madras High Court order following a habeas corpus petition filed by Dr. S. Kamaraj, a retired professor. He alleged that his daughters, Geetha Kamaraj (42) and Latha Kamaraj (39), were being held at the foundation against their will, raising concerns about the foundation’s influence on its residents.

Father’s Allegations Lead to Inquiry

The petition filed by Dr. Kamaraj claimed that his daughters, who had been living at the Isha Foundation for some time, were being brainwashed into becoming monks and were restricted from contacting their family. He also alleged that the foundation was converting individuals into monks and imposing strict control over their lives. This raised red flags for the court, which questioned the contradictions in the teachings of Sadhguru, especially since his own daughter is married and living a settled life.

Madras High Court Calls for Criminal Case Review

The Madras High Court’s directive to investigate the foundation came as part of its broader scrutiny of religious and spiritual organizations. The court has asked for a comprehensive report on all criminal cases associated with the Isha Foundation. This includes understanding the circumstances of residents, how they arrived at the foundation, and their current living conditions.

The Coimbatore Rural Police have been tasked with verifying the identities of the residents and looking into the foundation’s legal standing. The results of this inquiry could significantly impact the foundation’s image and its future operations.

Isha Foundation’s Response: Routine Inquiry

In a statement, the Isha Foundation downplayed the police presence, describing the visit as a “general inquiry” aimed at understanding the foundation’s lifestyle and routines. The foundation emphasized that the police were simply speaking with residents and volunteers to verify their reasons for staying at the ashram and how they came to join. They have reiterated that all activities are transparent and conducted with the full consent of the residents.

Focus on Sadhguru and Isha Foundation’s Practices

While Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev remains a highly influential spiritual leader with millions of followers globally, the foundation has faced allegations in the past regarding its practices. Critics have accused the organization of coercive tactics and isolating individuals from their families. However, Isha has consistently denied these claims, maintaining that all activities are voluntary.

The court’s inquiry into the criminal cases associated with the foundation is expected to reveal more about its internal workings and whether it operates within legal parameters.

Public Reaction and Potential Implications

As news of the inquiry spreads, public opinion on the Isha Foundation appears divided. Supporters continue to defend Sadhguru’s teachings, while critics question the organization’s methods. The Madras High Court’s request for an investigation into criminal cases against the foundation could lead to further scrutiny of its activities and operations.

The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the future of the foundation and its reputation. If any wrongdoing is found, it could have serious legal and financial implications for the organization.

The police inquiry at Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation, ordered by the Madras High Court, has opened up a larger conversation about the practices of spiritual organizations in India. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the foundation will face legal action or if it will emerge unscathed from the allegations.
