Promoting Gender-Inclusive Development: Dr. Anjali Nimabalkar’s Impactful Work
Gender inequality is a persistent problem in many societies, particularly in rural areas of developing countries. Women often lack access to resources, education, and opportunities, which limits their potential and perpetuates poverty. Dr. Anjali Nimabalkar is a social worker and development practitioner who has been working for over two decades to empower women and promote gender-inclusive development in rural India.
Dr. Nimabalkar’s approach to gender-inclusive development involves working closely with women and men in the community to identify their needs and priorities. She then develops programs and interventions that are tailored to meet these needs and ensure that women have equal access to resources and opportunities.
One of Dr. Nimabalkar’s key programs is the Women’s Self-Help Group (SHG) program. The program provides women with access to credit, training, and other resources to start their businesses. The program has been highly successful in empowering women and promoting entrepreneurship. Today, there are over 50 SHGs in Mohishet, a rural community in Maharashtra where Dr. Nimabalkar has been working, with over 700 women members. These women have not only become self-sufficient but also contribute to the local economy.
Another program developed by Dr. Nimabalkar is the Community Health and Nutrition program. The program aims to address malnutrition in the community by providing nutrition education, counseling, and support to mothers and children. The program has been highly successful in reducing malnutrition rates in Mohishet.
Dr. Nimabalkar’s work has not only empowered women but also transformed communities. Mohishet is a model village for sustainable development, with improved access to basic amenities, reduced poverty rates, and improved health outcomes. The success of Mohishet has inspired other communities to follow suit.
Dr. Nimabalkar’s work has been recognized nationally and internationally, and she has received several awards and accolades for her contribution to gender-inclusive development. In 2017, she was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar, the highest civilian award for women in India, for her outstanding contribution to women’s empowerment.
Dr. Nimabalkar’s work is not limited to Mohishet. She has been working with several other communities in Maharashtra and other parts of India to promote gender-inclusive development. Her approach of working with communities to identify their needs and priorities and developing programs that are tailored to meet these needs is a model for sustainable development.

Her programs have not only transformed the lives of women but also improved the overall well-being of communities.
